Miami Based Artists: Better Alive than Dead Part III

November 15, 2016 - October 31, 2017

Miami Based Artists: Better Alive than Dead (Part III) is an exhibition of artworks by artists who have been living and working in South Florida, or did so at a previous time and are presently living elsewhere. A variety of media from drawing, photography, video, paintings, sculpture and installation is displayed.

The title of this selection from the Mosquera Collection was taken from the last in a series of three round table discussions that were hosted by the Mosquera's at Art@Work between 2003 and 2005. Dr. Mosquera originally derived its title from, Better Dead than Alive, one of Ruben Torres-Llorca's art pieces. The first in the series of conversations was Cuban Artist Off the Record and the second one was Latin American Artists: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. All three were by invitation only to artists, curators, museum directors and art critics with the idea that the talks could be hosted in the future by museums in an open forum.

Since 2014 Liza and Dr. Arturo F. Mosquera have taken pride great pride in presenting Miami Based Artists: Better Alive than Dead. A series of exhibitions were envisioned by the couple back in 2004, but not programmed until recently over a time span of several years. The Mosquera Collection has been featured in two major shows Ways of Worldmaking: A Passion for Collecting at Miami Dade College and The Persistence of Memories: Selection from the Mosquera Collection at Broward College.

Recent selections from the collection were chosen to be displayed in specific years to highlight exhibits related to the different conversations: Color My World Red, Latin American Art: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Part I) and (Part II), Miami Based Artists: Better Alive than Dead (Part I) and  (Part II).

Art@Work is located at Dr. Arturo F. Mosquera's orthodontic office where he and his wife, Liza, have been showcasing exhibits of their collection since 1998, which they rotate on an annual basis, in addition to the individual artists' solo exhibits in the lobby of the office that they host periodically for the benefit of the patients of the practice, their family and the community at large.
